Joshua Pagan vs Rodolfo Bustamante

This one has that Mexico-versus-Puerto-Rico flavour, but let’s not pretend it is even money. Joshua “Double J” Pagan is the house fighter, unbeaten, full of momentum, and boxing in Grand Rapids with the crowd behind him. Rodolfo Bustamante, “El Elegante”, brings a good record, experience, and that Mexican durability you never disrespect, but this is a big jump up in class.

Pagan is 15-0 with five knockouts, which might fool a few people into thinking he cannot hurt you. Wrong. He hurts you with pressure. He hurts you by making you work every second, digging the body, keeping his feet alive, and turning the fight into a proper tear-up without losing shape. He is not looking for one big shot. He breaks you by making you uncomfortable.

Bustamante is 23-1-1 with 13 knockouts, so he is not just coming to survive. He can counter; he has rounds behind him, and early on, he will try to make Pagan walk onto something sharp on the whiskers. The problem is, if he gives ground in straight lines, Pagan will be on him all night. Once Pagan starts touching the ribs and stepping round after punching, Bustamante’s tidy work could start looking ragged.

The key for Pagan is educated pressure: body first, head second, no admiring his work. For Bustamante, it is the jab, the first counter, and refusing to let Pagan set that suffocating rhythm.

I think Bustamante has a few decent moments early, but by the middle rounds, Pagan’s volume, feet, and engine take over. The Mexican stays brave, but bravery only gets you so far, and the body shots are adding up. Pagan breaks him down and forces the stoppage.
