Reasoning

This is the sort of fight that sorts out who really understands their trade. There is no easy night here, no soft touch and no room for posing. Chantelle Cameron brings the pressure, the physical strength and the appetite for hard work, while Mikaela Mayer brings the size, the reach and the sharper long-range tools. Birmingham will be loud for Cameron, but Mayer has been around too long to let a hostile crowd knock her out of rhythm.

ย

Mayerโ€™s biggest advantage is obvious before a punch is thrown. She is taller, longer and naturally suited to controlling the contest from behind the jab. When she keeps her feet moving and punches straight, she can make opponents cross an awful lot of ground just to get close. Cameron, though, is built for that sort of graft. She is compact, strong through the hips and very good at closing the distance behind a solid guard before letting her hands go in bunches.

ย

The key for Cameron is not simply getting inside but making the time there count. She must cut Mayer off rather than follow her, pin her near the ropes and attack the body before coming upstairs. Mayer can finish combinations standing tall and occasionally retreats in straight lines, which gives Cameron a chance to land the right hand and then dig the left hook underneath. If Cameron allows her to slide away untouched, all that pressure will be wasted.

ย

Mayer must stay disciplined. Her jab can control the pace, but she cannot afford to throw a combination and remain in front of Cameron, admiring it. She needs to score, pivot, and force Cameron to start over. The two-minute rounds favour that approach because a clean burst near the end of a close session can leave a stronger impression with the judges.

ย

The danger for Mayer is pride. She has a habit of proving she can fight at close quarters when there is no need. Against Cameron, that could turn a technical contest into a rough old slog. Cameron will welcome the elbows, shoulders and body work because that is where she can make the fight ugly and uncomfortable.

ย

I expect Cameron to succeed in the middle rounds and push Mayer harder than the early odds suggest. Even so, Mayerโ€™s reach, jab and cleaner work from distance should give her the edge over ten rounds. Cameron will make her earn every minute, but Mayer will land the clearer punches and finish enough rounds strongly to take a unanimous decision.
