Albert Gonzalez vs Edward Vazquez

This is a tough examination for Gonzalez. Vazquez has made good fighters work, and I wouldn’t mistake those defeats by Ford and Cordina for evidence he’s easy pickings. Gonzalez needs patience here, because enthusiasm alone won’t beat an experienced opponent who can nick rounds.

I like Gonzalez’s pressure when he uses the jab to get close and puts combinations together downstairs. The danger is staying square after punching and giving Vazquez a clean reply. I’d want Vazquez disrupting that rhythm with his jab, turning Gonzalez and making him reset. He cannot afford long spells defending against the ropes.

My pick is Gonzalez on points. I expect his body work and sustained activity to make the difference late, but he’ll have to earn it. I’m expecting competitive rounds and adjustments, rather than another quick finish.
