Age on fight night 28Why the House picks Aaron McKenna
Dublin’s 3Arena hosts Zuffa Boxing 10 on August 8, with the vacant IBF middleweight belt on the line. Both men are unbeaten, but Aaron McKenna has faced the brighter lights and carries the pressure of fighting at home. Etinosa Oliha is no imported patsy, though. He is disciplined and physically strong, and has spent years learning his trade on the European circuit.
They are both tall orthodox middleweights, but they go about the job differently. McKenna is the busier, more aggressive fighter, using a stiff jab and long combinations before leaning on a man at close quarters. His victory over Liam Smith proved he can maintain a serious engine over 12 rounds. Oliha is calmer and more economical. He keeps a tidy shape, punches accurately and rarely gives away cheap openings, although his opposition has generally been below McKenna’s level.
McKenna must not rush because of the crowd. He should double the jab, work Oliha’s chest and body, then make the Italian fight at a pace he has not previously experienced. Oliha’s best weapon will be the straight right as McKenna squares up during combinations. Aaron can get untidy and use the forearm inside, as shown by his point deduction against Smith.
Oliha will be organised and difficult to shift, but McKenna has stronger recent form, greater output, and better experience under pressure. I expect a close first half before the Irishman’s engine takes over.
Aaron McKenna to win by unanimous decision after 12 rounds.
