Xander Zayas Beats Abass Baraou by Split Decision

The Coliseo José Miguel Agrelot in San Juan felt like it was breathing with Xander Zayas from the opening bell, every neat little step and every sharp, skimming punch getting the sort of approval usually reserved for a home run. By the end of twelve rounds, the 23-year-old had given Puerto Rico a champion it could properly claim as its own in the moment, outboxing Abass Baraou to a split decision and walking away with both major belts at junior middleweight.

Zayas began like a man who knew precisely where the danger lived. He stayed long, light on his feet, and made the fight his geometry lesson, angles, feints, the jab flicking out to measure Baraou and the right hand sliding in when the guard parted. Baraou, sturdy and determined, did what pressure fighters are meant to do: he marched forward behind a high guard and tried to make the ring smaller, but early on, he looked as though he were following rather than finding. Zayas’ counters were the cleanest work of the first stretch, the kind of punches that don’t always sound dramatic but land with the clarity judges tend to remember.

Baraou’s best moments came when he accepted that the chase alone wasn’t enough and began to press with more intent, especially from the fifth round onwards, stepping in harder, making Zayas trade more often, and finally getting shots through rather than on gloves. Even then, Zayas was rarely where Baraou wanted him for long. He would give ground, pivot out, and reappear on the flank with quick hands, scoring and moving before Baraou could set his feet and answer correctly. It was less about running and more about refusing to be stationed where Baraou could unload.

There was a spell in the middle rounds where the fight tightened, and Zayas had to work rather than cruise, because Baraou’s persistence started to buy him time in punching range. The champion’s pressure forced Zayas into longer exchanges than he’d planned, and that’s where Baraou’s strength and discipline showed, nudging Zayas back and making him prove he could stay composed while the pace crept up. Still, whenever it looked as though Baraou might be dragging him into something messy, Zayas found a way to reset the distance and get back to that clean, snappy scoring.

The ninth round brought a minor complication for Zayas when he said afterwards that he had bothered his hand, the sort of nuisance that can turn a comfortable night into a nervous one if it steals confidence in the punch. But he managed it like a champion, staying with the plan, choosing his moments, and keeping the fight tactical rather than emotional. Baraou kept coming, and Zayas kept answering in bursts, sharp enough to keep the crowd onside and the rounds slipping his way.

Then, in the twelfth, Zayas did something both risky and crowd-pleasing: he stood his ground and traded with Baraou in the middle of the ring, as if to reassure everyone that the clever stuff hadn’t come with a white flag attached. It was the only real stretch where Baraou got the kind of fight he’d wanted from the start, and it gave the finish a roar and a sense of release, but it also suited Zayas’ night, because even when he chose to trade, he did it on his terms.

The scorecards caused their own little stir. Two judges had it 116–112 for Zayas. At the same time, the third somehow produced the same score in Baraou’s favour, an odd bit of symmetry that raised eyebrows even among people who usually try to keep theirs down during announcements. The official verdict was a split decision, and with it, Zayas retained his WBO title and took Baraou’s WBA belt to become the youngest unified titleholder in boxing. Baraou, losing in his first defence, was left with the frustration of having done plenty of honest work without quite solving the moving target in front of him.
