Fight Report

Rolando Romero secured a much-needed unanimous decision victory against Manuel Jaimes at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The bout, which opened the PBC on Prime pay-per-view card headlined by the Canelo Alvarez-Edgar Berlanga clash, saw Romero deliver a disciplined performance that marked a significant departure from his recent outings.

Romero, known for his bombastic personality and explosive fighting style, entered this contest with a clear mandate: to secure a clean, uncontroversial win. Coming off a series of challenging fights, including knockout losses to Gervonta Davis and Isaac Cruz and a contentious victory over Ismael Barroso, Romero (now 16-2, 13 KOs) adopted a more measured approach against Jaimes.

The fight's opening was remarkably subdued, with CompuBox recording just one landed punch for Jaimes and none for Romero in the first round. However, as the bout progressed, Romero's gameplan became evident. He worked behind a solid guard, keeping his punches short and powerful while focusing on fundamentals.

Jaimes (16-2-1, 11 KOs) showed commendable spirit throughout the contest, consistently pressing forward and looking for opportunities to land his overhand right. However, his technique often let him down, with many of his punches needing more power due to poor body positioning.

As the rounds ticked by, a clear pattern emerged. Jaimes would advance, looking to engage, while Romero patiently waited for counter-punching opportunities. When these openings presented themselves, Romero capitalized with crisp two and three-punch combinations that repeatedly caught Jaimes off-balance.

Romero's success was built on a foundation of solid fundamentals. His stiff jab and punishing body shots proved particularly effective, disrupting Jaimes' rhythm and allowing Romero to land cleanly to the head. This tactical approach allowed Romero to control the pace of the fight, which he acknowledged post-bout: "Jaimes was coming forward a lot, but I was controlling the pace. The fight was going how I wanted it to."

While the contest may not have provided the fireworks some fans have come to expect from Romero, it showcased a more mature, disciplined fighter. This evolution was reflected in Romero's post-fight comments: "I needed a tough 10-round fight against someone hungry, and that's what I got tonight. I was doing a lot of stuff tonight that I should have done in my earlier fights."

The judges' scorecards unanimously read 99-91 in favour of Romero, a fair reflection of his dominance throughout the ten rounds. Jaimes, gracious in defeat, recognized the need for improvement, stating, "I could have been more active; that would have helped me land more."

This victory is crucial for Romero to rebuild his standing in the lightweight division. By demonstrating his ability to box patiently and stick to a game plan, Romero has added a new dimension to his fighting repertoire that could serve him well in future high-stakes bouts.

Romero's performance against Manuel Jaimes may be remembered as a turning point in his career. While it may not have been his most exciting outing, it was perhaps his most necessary, proving that "Rolly" can indeed box and brawl when the situation demands it.
