Peter McGrail Edges Past Rhys Edwards

Peter McGrail secured a narrow points victory over late replacement Rhys Edwards in a highly competitive featherweight contest. Originally scheduled to face Dennis McCann, McGrail instead found himself across the ring from Edwards, who stepped in on just three days' notice after a marathon 20-hour journey.

McGrail displayed his sharp southpaw skills from the opening bell, landing precise shots and dictating the pace. Edwards, however, proved a resilient and game opponent, absorbing McGrail's clean punches on his guard and countering effectively when given the opportunity.

In the third round, a clash of heads opened a cut by McGrail's right eye. Despite the blood trickling down the side of his face, the Liverpool fighter remained composed and continued to press forward. On the other hand, Edwards began to develop swelling around his left eye but refused to be deterred.

As the fight entered the second half, Edwards found success in the eighth round, landing several clean shots that forced McGrail into a brief moment of holding. Trainer Gary Lockett urged Edwards to let his hands go, and the Welshman responded aggressively.

The final two rounds were fought intensely, with both fighters trading leather and refusing to back down. By the final bell, McGrail's face was bloodied, and Edwards' eye was nearly swollen shut.

The judges scored the contest 96-95 and 96-94 twice, all favouring McGrail. The close nature of the scorecards reflected the competitiveness of the bout. McGrail improves to 11-1 (6 KOs), while Edwards, despite the loss, earns significant respect for his courage and preparation under short notice, now holding a record of 16-1 (6 KOs).
