Lawrence Okolie returned to the ring in spectacular fashion, securing a decisive first-round knockout victory over Lukasz Rozanski in Rzeszow, Poland. This win marked Okolie's triumphant comeback and crowned him the WBC bridgerweight champion, enhancing his career trajectory towards the heavyweight division.
From the opening bell, Okolie showcased his superior skills and power. The London native, an Olympian and former WBO cruiserweight champion, quickly established his dominance against the previously undefeated Polish hero. The packed arena was filled with fervent supporters of Rozanski, but Okolie's performance silenced the crowd as he methodically dismantled their hometown favourite.
Okolie, now boasting a record of 20-1 with 15 knockouts, took control early, using his jab effectively to keep Rozanski at bay. He skillfully mixed his attacks to the body and head, setting up his powerful right hand. The first significant moment came when Okolie timed Rozanski with a precise counter right hand, sending the Pole to the canvas. Despite getting up quickly, Rozanski found himself overwhelmed by Okolie's relentless assault.
Okolie landed an even more devastating right hand with a minute left in the round. Although Rozanski protested, claiming he had been hit behind the head, the bout continued, and Okolie capitalised on his momentum. A series of right hands, culminating in a sharp uppercut, put Rozanski down for the third and final time. The Belgian referee, Daniel Van de Wiele, had seen enough and stopped the fight at 2:55 of the first round.
This was a humbling defeat for Rozanski, who entered the ring with a perfect record of 15-0 and 14 knockouts. The Polish fighter had no answers for Okolie's precision and power, resulting in his first career loss. Reflecting on his victory, Okolie expressed immense satisfaction. "I think this was the best moment in boxing for me; I'm super happy," he stated. "New weight, I put the KO back in Okolie. I said I was going to go in there from round one and try to get the knockout, and I went in there and done that."
This fight marked Okolie's debut under the guidance of his new trainer, Joe Gallagher. Having previously trained with Shane McGuigan and SugarHill Steward, Okolie praised Gallagher's rigorous training regimen despite the tough sessions. "Joe Gallagher, hats off to him, I hated him the whole training camp, every day there was something else, but every day he was there for me," Okolie acknowledged.
The bout against Rozanski was Okolie's first since his sole career loss to Chris Billam-Smith, which saw him lose his WBO cruiserweight title. Unable to secure a rematch with Billam-Smith, Okolie made the strategic decision to move up to bridgerweight. This victory is a pivotal step in his journey towards competing as a heavyweight, a long-term goal for the Hackney-born fighter.
Okolie's resounding win in Poland breathes new life into his career and solidified his status as a two-weight world champion. His sights are now firmly set on the heavyweight division, where he aims to continue his ascent and make a lasting impact.
