Rising heavyweight prospect Jared "Big Baby" Anderson (17-0, 15 KOs) secured a lacklustre unanimous decision victory against Ryad Merhy (32-3, 26 KOs) in a Top Rank-promoted main event at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas. The judges scored the fight 100-90 twice and 99-91 in favour of Anderson, but the bout failed to live up to expectations, drawing boos from the crowd for its lack of action.

Merhy, a former cruiserweight making his U.S. debut, employed an extremely defensive strategy, rarely engaging with Anderson and spending most of the fight behind a high guard. Anderson, a 24-year-old from Toledo, Ohio, controlled the pace with his jab but struggled to land significant power shots against the elusive Merhy.

Despite Anderson's consistent output, the fight settled into a repetitive pattern, with Merhy throwing very few punches and Anderson unable to capitalise on his opponent's inactivity. By the seventh round, Merhy had not thrown more than 20 punches in a single round, while Anderson's output dipped below 50 only once.

ESPN broadcaster Tim Bradley expressed frustration with the fight, stating, "Man, this is awful," and later adding, "I never want to see Merhy again. Ever."

To his credit, Anderson boxed intelligently, maintaining his aggression just enough to secure the rounds without taking unnecessary risks. However, he appeared content with the victory in the decision and did not pursue a knockout, which might have salvaged the night for the disappointed fans.
In the final round, Merhy showed a brief surge in activity, throwing wild combinations and landing the occasional solid punch, but Anderson easily evaded most of the attacks.

After the fight, Anderson declared, "We're coming to knock everybody off," followed by an expletive that prompted an apology from the ESPN broadcast team.

Anderson considered one of the best hopes for the future of American heavyweight boxing, faces a court date on Monday related to a high-speed car chase incident in February. Given his apparent lack of long-term commitment to the sport, Top Rank may need to accelerate his career progression.

However, uneventful performances like this one are unlikely to generate the excitement and momentum needed to propel Anderson to the division's top.
