In a commanding performance at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, IBF world cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia successfully defended his title against British challenger Jack Massey. The Sydney-based southpaw showcased his skills and power, forcing a stoppage in the sixth round.
Opetaia, now 26-0 with 20 knockouts, controlled the fight from the opening bell. The 29-year-old Australian established his dominance early, utilizing sharp left hands while Massey attempted to counter with right hands to the head and body. Opetaia diversified his attack as the fight progressed, focusing on body shots and increasing his output.
Massey, whose record falls to 22-3 (12 KOs), struggled to mount any significant offence. The 31-year-old from Marple, Cheshire, found himself frequently cornered and overwhelmed by Opetaia's relentless pressure. By the fourth round, Massey was cut near his left eye, further complicating his efforts to turn the tide.
The champion's methodical approach paid dividends as he built a substantial lead on the scorecards. Opetaia's combination of precision and power gradually wore down Massey, who showed commendable resilience but was increasingly on the defensive.
The end came in the sixth round when Opetaia unleashed a barrage of punches that left Massey reeling. Recognizing the dire situation, Massey's trainer, Joe Gallagher, threw in the towel, prompting referee Steve Gray to halt the contest at 2:00.
This victory marks Opetaia's second defence of his IBF title and continues his impressive run against British opposition in the cruiserweight division. The performance also fuels speculation about a potential future matchup with light heavyweight star Dmitry Bivol, who was competing in the main event of the same card.
Massey's defeat represents a setback in his quest for world title glory, while Opetaia's dominant showing cements his status as one of the premier fighters in the cruiserweight division.
