Craig Richards Stops Padraig McCrory With Brutal Body Shot

With a dominant performance, Craig Richards re-established himself as a force at light heavyweight, stopping Padraig McCrory in the eighth round with a perfectly placed body shot. Fighting in front of a hostile Belfast crowd, the former British champion showed composure, control, and clinical finishing, gradually breaking down McCrory before delivering the final blow that ended the contest at 1:58 of the eighth round. With the win, Richards improved his record to 19-4-1 (12 KOs), while McCrory, now 19-2 (9 KOs), suffered his second career defeat.

The fight began with Richards dictating the pace, using his superior movement and sharp jab to make McCrory miss while picking his moments to land clean shots. McCrory, trying to impose himself, struggled to get past Richards' defence and lacked the activity to unsettle the Londoner. As the rounds progressed, Richards grew in confidence, steadily increasing his output while McCrory's attacks became more predictable. By the fifth round, McCrory appeared to be running out of ideas, lunging in with desperate shots while Richards countered effectively and began to walk him down.

Sensing McCrory had little left, Richards pressed the action in the seventh, landing clean right hands with the Irishman backing up. The pro-McCrory crowd, loud in the early stages, fell silent as their fighter showed signs of unravelling. The end came in the eighth when Richards cornered McCrory and landed a sickening left hook to the body. McCrory dropped to a knee, wincing in pain, as referee Howard Foster began the count. Seeing their fighter unable to continue, McCrory's corner stepped in to stop the fight, sealing a much-needed victory for Richards.

This was a crucial win for Richards after suffering a broad points defeat to Willy Hutchinson in Saudi Arabia last year. Now back on track, he will look to build momentum towards another shot at world-level opposition.
