In a thrilling encounter, Cheavon Clarke secured the British cruiserweight title by stopping Ellis Zorro in the eighth round, overcoming a challenging and competitive fight. This victory marked a significant milestone for Clarke, who had been eagerly awaiting his shot at the title after a frustrating period of uncertainty regarding Isaac Chamberlain's decision to defend the belt.
With a professional record of 9-0 (7 KOs), Clarke demonstrated his resilience and determination throughout the fight. His opponent, Ellis Zorro, entered the bout with a record of 17-2 (7 KOs) and aimed to utilize his jab and footwork to neutralize Clarke's aggressive inside game. In the opening round, Zorro effectively employed his lead left hand, boxing smartly and maintaining distance.
Weighing 199 1/4 lbs, Clarke showcased his upper-body movement and explosive bursts. However, Zorro, at 198 1/2 lbs, remained composed, landing a solid right hand and a sharp uppercut, causing some difficulties for Clarke to close the gap. Recognizing the need to disrupt Zorro's rhythm, Clarke adapted his strategy in the third round, opting to move on the back foot and inviting Zorro to come forward, attempting to counter the jab.
As the rounds progressed, Clarke began to find his rhythm, especially in the fourth round, where he landed a couple of powerful right hands and integrated his left hook effectively. Zorro, however, continued to reestablish his jab and followed it with his right hand, maintaining a systematic approach. The fight remained closely contested, with Zorro's steady, consistent work being met by Clarke's more dynamic and energetic bursts.
By the seventh round, the fight had opened up, favouring Clarke's instinctive and aggressive style. Although Zorro managed to have his moments with the jab and right hand, the bout increasingly played out in close quarters, where Clarke thrived. Zorro, more inclined to clinch and wait for breaks, received a warning for holding in the eighth round, which allowed Clarke to capitalize on the freedom to work inside.
Towards the end of the eighth round, Clarke backed Zorro against the ropes and unleashed a devastating right hand over the top, culminating in a fight-ending sequence. The referee stepped in to halt the contest at 2:59 of the round, handing Clarke a well-deserved victory and the British cruiserweight title.
This triumph ended Clarke's wait for a title shot and placed him firmly in the conversation for significant domestic fights in the cruiserweight division. At 33 years old, Clarke's path looks promising as he sets his sights on further accolades and challenges in the ring.
