Fight Report
Rising featherweight contender Bruce Carrington delivered a masterful performance on Saturday night, stopping replacement opponent Brayan De Gracia in the eighth round at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York. The 27-year-old Brooklyn native, ranked No. 4 by the WBO and No. 7 by the WBC, displayed his exceptional boxing IQ and skill set, impressing four-division champion Naoya Inoue, who watched intently from ringside.
Carrington, who turned professional in January 2023, faced a last-minute replacement in De Gracia after his original opponent, Enrique Vivas, could not secure a visa in time for the bout. Despite the change in opposition, Carrington remained focused and executed his game plan perfectly, systematically breaking down the dangerous Panamanian fighter.
Carrington allowed De Gracia to be the aggressor from the outset, patiently waiting for openings to counter with his powerful shots. Carrington began to find his rhythm in the second round, landing two hard left hands on De Gracia's head, signalling the beginning of his offensive onslaught.
As the fight progressed, Carrington's precision and power became more evident. In the third round, he connected with a head-jarring right hand and followed up with a solid body shot. However, De Gracia found some success with his counterpunch, adding an element of intrigue to the contest.
Undeterred, Carrington continued to apply pressure, exploiting De Gracia's eagerness to engage by catching him with a hard right hand to punctuate an exchange. By the fifth round, Carrington's relentless attack had taken its toll on De Gracia, who found himself on the canvas courtesy of a well-timed flurry capped off by a right hand to the head.
With blood flowing from De Gracia's nose and his legs weakening, it became clear that Carrington was in complete control of the bout. De Gracia's corner advised him to hold more to preserve himself from further damage, but their efforts proved futile.
Carrington nearly sent De Gracia through the ropes in the seventh round with a blistering combination of two quick lefts and a hammering right to the head. The writing was on the wall, and in the eighth round, Carrington unleashed a final barrage that left De Gracia defenceless, prompting the referee to intervene and halt the contest, awarding Carrington an impressive TKO victory.
Speaking after the fight, Carrington acknowledged the presence of Naoya Inoue, who is rumoured to be considering a move to the featherweight division by 2025. The young contender praised De Gracia's toughness and will, emphasizing the importance of breaking down such a determined opponent.
With his 12th professional victory and 8th knockout, Bruce Carrington continues establishing himself as a rising star in the featherweight division. His rapid ascent through the ranks, impressive skill set, and boxing IQ have made him a fighter to watch in the coming years. As he sets his sights on future challenges, Carrington's performance against Brayan De Gracia clearly indicates his immense potential and the bright future ahead.
