Flyweight contender Andy Dominguez overcame adversity to earn a hard-fought split decision victory over Angel Geovanny Meza Morales in an eight-round main event at Sony Hall in New York City. The bout, broadcast live on DAZN, saw Dominguez climb off the canvas to secure the win with scores of 77-74 and 76-75 in his favour, while one judge awarded Morales the fight at 76-75.
The opening round was measured, with both fighters looking to establish their rhythm. Now training under Marvin Somodio in Los Angeles, Dominguez began to find his groove in the second, dictating the pace with an effective jab and forward pressure. Morales, known for his high punch output, struggled to find his range early as Dominguez countered with precision and methodically broke him down.
Momentum shifted in the third round when Morales, 24, landed a well-placed body shot that slowed Dominguez. Moments later, Morales capitalized on a missed left hook from Dominguez, connecting with a clean right hand that sent the favoured fighter to the canvas. After a strong start, Dominguez entered the fourth round, facing a much tighter contest. Sensing an opportunity, Morales increased his aggression and landed several heavy shots, pressing Dominguez and making the middle rounds highly competitive.
The fifth round highlighted the contrast in styles, with Dominguez using his technical skills to land more accurate punches while Morales continued to target him with eye-catching power shots. Dominguez regained control in the sixth, landing clean combinations and neutralizing Morales’ offence. Though Morales surged late in the round, his output began to wane by the seventh, allowing Dominguez to dictate the pace confidently.
In the eighth and final round, Dominguez boxed intelligently, maintaining distance and neutralizing Morales’ attempts to close the gap. His disciplined approach in the closing moments helped him secure a narrow victory in a fight that tested his resilience and adaptability.
The win improved Dominguez’s record to 12-1 (6 KOs), extending his win streak to two since suffering his lone defeat to Yankiel Rivera. Morales, who dropped to 8-3-3 (6 KOs), is now on a two-fight losing streak but demonstrated grit and determination throughout the contest.
Looking ahead, Dominguez expressed his desire to continue facing tough opponents as he builds toward more significant opportunities in the flyweight division.
