Fight Report

Undisputed junior lightweight champion Alycia Baumgardner's return to the ring ended in an unexpected no-contest against Delfine Persoon at Lux Studio in Atlanta. The bout was halted in the fourth round due to an accidental head clash, preventing an official decision.

Baumgardner (15-1, 7 KOs), under the guidance of her new lead trainer Ramon Matthews Jr., showcased an impressive level of form. The 30-year-old Detroit native's use of her jab to control distance in the opening round was masterful, and her left hook that caused Persoon's glove to touch the canvas was a sight to behold.

The champion's dominance continued in the second round as she pinned Persoon against the ropes, landing combinations that included a notably impactful right hand. Despite Persoon's renowned pressure tactics in the third, Baumgardner's superior power and timing kept the Belgian veteran's offence in check.

As the fourth round began, Baumgardner continued to maintain her control, demonstrating her speed and precision. However, the fight took an unexpected turn when their heads collided following a Baumgardner right hand and Persoon's attempted counter. The resulting cut on Persoon's face led the ringside physician to stop the fight, a decision that left everyone, including the fighters, surprised and intrigued.

This bout marked Baumgardner's first appearance since a year-long hiatus following a positive test for a banned substance in July 2023. After an investigation, the WBC cleared Baumgardner of intentional ingestion, and the Association of Boxing Commissions lifted her suspension in March 2024.

While the no-contest outcome was disappointing for both fighters and fans, Baumgardner's performance up to that point suggested she had not lost a step during her time away from the ring. The abrupt ending leaves questions unanswered about how the fight might have progressed, potentially setting the stage for a rematch or another high-profile bout for Baumgardner shortly.
