Yaser Al Ghena, known as “Yasii Boy,” is a Super-lightweight boxer representing the United Kingdom. He was born on April 10, 1995, in Syria and moved to the UK at the age of three, where he was raised in Finchley, London, and remains his residence. He maintains an Orthodox stance.
Yaser Al Ghena’s path to the ring was marked by early adversity. Originally aiming to follow in his father’s footsteps as a footballer, his dreams were dashed when he failed to secure a scholarship at Arsenal’s academy. He admitted that, after this setback, he became “lost,” hanging around the wrong people, dealing with anger issues stemming from his mother’s early passing, and getting into trouble. It was a counsellor who eventually channelled his fighting spirit, suggesting, “If you love fighting so much, why don’t you try and do it properly?”
This pivotal advice led him to Finchley ABC (Amateur Boxing Club), which he refers to as the place “where my whole mindset changed.” He often recalls the moment his eyes “lit up” walking into the gym, feeling like he was in a Rocky film. His former coach at Finchley ABC was Sean Murphy, whom Al Ghena regularly visits, emphasising the importance of remembering his roots.
During his amateur career, he also represented Islington ABC. While boxing for Islington, he secured his first-ever London title, defeating a teammate in the final at Welterweight. He competed against boxers from notable clubs like Repton ABC during this time.
Yaser Al Ghena made his professional debut on November 25, 2017. The bout was contested at Welterweight and was scheduled for 4 rounds. His opponent in his debut was Kevin McCauley.
His professional career has been guided by Steve Goodwin, his manager and promoter at Goodwin Boxing. Al Ghena turned professional with Goodwin, raced to five unbeaten wins, but then chose to go “self-managed” for two years. After experiencing “false promises,” he returned to Goodwin Boxing, signing a new three-year management contract, stating, “I am delighted to be back home.”
