Victor Cordoba Biography
Victor "Toby" Cordoba, born on March 15, 1962, in Punta Alegre, Panama, emerged as a formidable presence in the super-middleweight division during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Standing at 6 feet 1 inch with a reach of 76.8 inches, the southpaw began his professional boxing career on May 30, 1981, facing Felix Rivas at Arena Panama Al Brown in Colon City. The bout concluded in a draw, marking the beginning of Cordoba's journey in the professional ranks.
Cordoba faced several world-class opponents throughout his career, showcasing his abilities at the highest level. On April 5, 1991, a significant milestone came when he challenged the undefeated Christophe Tiozzo for the WBA and lineal super-middleweight titles at Palais des Sports in Marseille. Cordoba secured a victory by technical knockout in the ninth round, capturing the world titles and ending Tiozzo's 28-fight winning streak.
Cordoba successfully defended his titles on December 13, 1991, against the unbeaten Vincenzo Nardiello at Palais Omnisport de Paris-Bercy in Paris. He achieved an 11th-round TKO, demonstrating his dominance in the division. However, on September 12, 1992, Cordoba faced Michael Nunn at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, where he lost his title by a split decision after 12 rounds. A rematch took place on January 30, 1993, at The Pyramid in Memphis, with Cordoba again falling short, this time by unanimous decision.
After a series of bouts in the subsequent years, Cordoba's final professional fight occurred on July 30, 1999, against Eduardo Rodriguez at the Balboa Civic Center in Panama City. Cordoba concluded his career on a high note, securing a fourth-round technical knockout victory.
Over an 18-year career, Cordoba compiled a professional record of 22 wins, 6 losses, and 3 draws, with 16 victories coming by way of knockout. His tenure in the ring is marked by notable victories and a world championship reign, reflecting his significant impact on the super-middleweight division during his era.
