Tony Tubbs

Tony Tubbs, known in the boxing world as "TNT," was born on February 15, 1958, in Cincinnati, Ohio. At 6 feet 3 inches and with a reach of approximately 79 inches, Tubbs showcased his orthodox stance throughout his career.

Tubbs compiled an impressive record of 240 wins against 13 losses in the amateur circuit. His notable victories included wins over future professionals such as Greg Page, Marvis Frazier, Jimmy Clark, and Mitch Green. Tubbs also served as a sparring partner for Muhammad Ali, assisting in preparations for Ali's rematch with Leon Spinks. His amateur aspirations culminated with the aim to compete in the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games; however, the U.S. boycott prevented his participation.

Transitioning to the professional arena, Tubbs made his debut on June 14, 1980, securing a first-round technical knockout against Bruce Scott at the Riverfront Coliseum in Cincinnati. Demonstrating skill and determination, Tubbs amassed an undefeated streak, leading to a title shot. On April 29, 1985, he faced Greg Page for the WBA Heavyweight Championship. Despite Page having bested him in their amateur encounters, Tubbs emerged victorious via unanimous decision, claiming the WBA title.

Tubbs's reign as champion was short-lived. In his first defence on January 17, 1986, he faced Tim Witherspoon in Atlanta. After fifteen competitive rounds, Witherspoon secured a majority decision victory, ending Tubbs's tenure as champion.

Throughout his career, Tubbs shared the ring with several notable heavyweights. He faced Mike Tyson on March 21, 1988, in Tokyo, challenging for the undisputed heavyweight title, but suffered a second-round technical knockout. Other significant bouts included matches against Orlin Norris, Riddick Bowe, and Bruce Seldon.

After a career spanning over two decades, Tubbs concluded his professional journey on November 4, 2006, with a unanimous decision victory over Adam Smith in Morgantown, West Virginia. His final record stood at 47 wins, 10 losses, with 25 victories by knockout.
