Tony “Bomber” Bellew is an English former professional boxer who fought in the light-heavyweight, cruiserweight, and, for two high-profile nights, heavyweight divisions during an 11-year professional career. Born on 30 November 1982 in Liverpool and fighting out of the city, Bellew boxed from an orthodox stance and stood 6ft 3in tall with a 74in. He finished his professional career with a record of 30 wins, 3 losses, and 1 draw, 20 wins coming by knockout.
He arrived in the paid ranks on 6 October 2007, a late starter by modern standards, but he brought an amateur grounding and a combative edge that made him a natural fit for the domestic scene. The early run was built on momentum and intent, and by March 2010, he was already in title fights, winning the vacant Commonwealth light-heavyweight belt in Liverpool and proving he could handle the pressure of twelve-round boxing as well as the noise that comes with fighting at home.
The light-heavyweight years were where Bellew’s identity was formed, equal parts ambition and abrasion. He added the British title in 2011 and aimed straight at the world level, eventually meeting Nathan Cleverly for the WBO light-heavyweight title in Liverpool in October 2011, losing a majority decision over twelve. It was a close, argumentative sort of fight, the kind where both men had their spells, and it left Bellew with the sense that he belonged in the conversation even if the belt stayed elsewhere.
He stayed at 175 pounds long enough to collect meaningful silverware and take the road that leads to a world title shot. Bellew won the WBC Silver title, drew and then outpointed Isaac Chilemba in a pair of fights, and earned a crack at Adonis Stevenson’s WBC world light-heavyweight title in Quebec City on 30 November 2013. Stevenson’s heavy left hand settled that one in the sixth, the first time Bellew had been stopped, and it pushed him towards the decision that reshaped the rest of his career, the move up to cruiserweight.
At cruiserweight, he looked fresher and more solid, and the rivalry with Cleverly was revisited at the higher weight in November 2014, with Bellew winning a split decision in Liverpool. He then built towards championship class, taking the European cruiserweight title against Mateusz Masternak at The O2 in December 2015, a disciplined twelve-round performance rather than a brawl, and it positioned him for the night he had chased. On 29 May 2016, at Goodison Park, Bellew knocked out Ilunga Makabu in the third round to win the vacant WBC cruiserweight world title, then defended it against BJ Flores in October.
The title reign fed directly into the fights that made him a household name beyond boxing. Bellew moved up to heavyweight to meet David Haye at The O2 in March 2017, a bout that changed tone when Haye injured his ankle, and Bellew’s pressure and persistence eventually forced a stoppage in the eleventh. The rematch in May 2018 ended earlier, Bellew stopping Haye in the fifth, two wins that were as much about control and temperament as about punch power, and they gave him the freedom to choose his ending.
He came back down to cruiserweight for one last roll of the dice, challenging Oleksandr Usyk for the undisputed championship on 10 November 2018 in Manchester. Bellew had his moments early, tried to disrupt rhythm and steal ground, but Usyk’s accuracy and pace told as the rounds went on, and Bellew was knocked out in the eighth, the final fight of his career. He retired as he said he would, a world champion at cruiserweight, a British and Commonwealth champion at light-heavyweight, and a fighter whose best nights were fuelled by a fierce sense of occasion and a willingness to carry his claims into the ring and live with the consequences.
