Terry Daniels, born May 1, 1946, in Willoughby, Ohio, emerged as a notable figure in the heavyweight boxing scene during the late 1960s and 1970s. Standing 6 feet tall with a reach of 73.5 inches, Daniels adopted an orthodox stance throughout his career.
Daniels' athletic journey began with a promising start in football at Southern Methodist University (SMU). Unfortunately, a knee injury during his freshman year curtailed his football aspirations. During his rehabilitation, Daniels developed an interest in boxing, which led him to compete in the amateur circuit. He achieved success in the Texas Golden Gloves, securing titles in both the Novice and Open divisions at light-heavyweight and heavyweight. His amateur record boasted nearly 50 bouts, reflecting his dedication and rapid progression in the sport.
Transitioning to the professional arena, Daniels made his debut on February 10, 1969, securing a first-round knockout against Charles Burnett at Sam's Sports Palace in Beaumont, Texas. Over the next few years, he built a respectable record, which culminated in a title shot against the reigning World Heavyweight Champion, Joe Frazier. This bout took place on January 15, 1972, at the Rivergate Auditorium in New Orleans. Despite a valiant effort, Daniels was overpowered by Frazier, who secured a technical knockout in the fourth round.
After the Frazier fight, Daniels faced formidable opponents in the heavyweight division. He squared off against notable fighters such as Cleveland Williams, John Conteh, and Jose Roman. Despite his determination, Daniels often found himself on the losing end against these seasoned competitors. His career was marked by a series of challenging bouts, leading to a decline in his win-loss record.
Daniels' final professional fight was on August 29, 1981, against Alfredo Evangelista in Eivissa, Spain. The bout ended in a knockout loss for Daniels in the second round, prompting his retirement from the sport. His professional record was 35 wins, 30 losses, and 1 draw, with 28 victories coming by knockout.
In the years following his retirement, Daniels faced significant health challenges, including tremors and memory loss, conditions often associated with the rigours of a boxing career. He resided in an assisted-living facility in Ohio, reflecting on his boxing journey with a sense of fulfilment despite the physical toll it had taken.
Terry Daniels passed away on September 3, 2020, at the age of 74. His life and career remain a testament to the highs and lows experienced by professional boxers, highlighting the sport's allure and inherent risks.
