Biography

Tavoris Cloud's journey from the depths of poverty in Tallahassee, Florida, to his prominent position in boxing's light heavyweight division is a testament to his resilience. Growing up in a household that sometimes housed 15 people and used ice-filled foot tubs as makeshift refrigerators, Cloud found his calling in boxing at age 14 under the guidance of coach Alonzo Johnson. Johnson not only provided training but also a place to stay during Cloud's high school years, setting the stage for his remarkable rise in the sport.

After reaching the finals of the 2002 U.S. National Amateur Championships, where he lost to Curtis Stevens, Cloud turned professional and built an impressive record. His breakthrough came in 2008 when he dominated former WBO champion Julio César González in a title eliminator, stopping him in ten rounds. Cloud captured the vacant IBF light heavyweight title in 2009 with a unanimous decision over Clinton Woods, throwing over 1,000 punches in a high-volume performance.

Cloud successfully defended his title five times between 2009 and 2013, including victories over veterans Glen Johnson and Fulgencio Zuniga. His controversial split decision win over Gabriel Campillo in 2012 marked the beginning of his decline. A scheduled defence against Jean Pascal fell through when Pascal withdrew, citing a hand injury—a publicly disputed claim.

Cloud's championship reign ended at age 31 against 48-year-old Bernard Hopkins, who outboxed him over twelve rounds at Brooklyn's Barclays Center. Cloud's career trajectory sharply declined afterwards. He suffered a stoppage loss to Adonis Stevenson in his next fight, followed by a devastating second-round knockout against Artur Beterbiev in 2014.

Cloud returned to the ring in 2020, after 6 years out, with a TKO victory over Ryan Soft in Daytona Beach. He then settled into retirement.
