Ruslan Chagaev Biography

Ruslan Shamilevich Chagaev, born on October 19, 1978, in Andijan, Uzbekistan, is a former professional boxer who competed from 2001 to 2016. He made history by becoming the first Asian boxer to win a world heavyweight title by any of the four major sanctioning bodies. Significant victories, devastating losses, and a fair share of controversies marked Chagaev's career.

Chagaev's amateur career was highly successful. He won gold medals at the 2001 World Championships and 1999 Asian Championships in the heavyweight and super-heavyweight divisions, respectively. He was the only non-Cuban boxer to defeat the legendary FΓ©lix SavΓ³n twice, earning him the nickname "White Tyson" for his impressive amateur record of 81 wins and four losses.

As a professional, Chagaev's defining moment came in 2007 when he defeated the towering Nikolai Valuev to win the WBA heavyweight title. Chagaev's speed, footwork, and technical skills neutralised Valuev's size advantage, leading to a majority decision victory. This win made Chagaev a national hero in Uzbekistan, and President Islam Karimov awarded him the Order of Outstanding Merit.

Chagaev defended his title twice before a series of injuries and health issues derailed his career. He was forced to withdraw from a unification bout with Sultan Ibragimov due to a stomach illness, and his rematch with Valuev was postponed multiple times due to a torn Achilles tendon and a failed medical test for hepatitis B.

In 2009, Chagaev faced Wladimir Klitschko in a bid to reclaim his status as a top heavyweight contender. Despite a valiant effort, Klitschko dominated Chagaev and lost by a 9th-round technical knockout in front of a record-breaking crowd of 61,000 in Germany.

Chagaev's personal life also made headlines when rumours surfaced about an alleged affair with Gulnara Karimova, the daughter of Uzbek President Islam Karimov. These rumours led to Chagaev's portraits being removed from public places in Uzbekistan and a ban on mentioning his name in Uzbek media.

In the latter stages of his career, Chagaev won the WBA (Regular) heavyweight title by defeating Fres Oquendo in 2014. He made one successful defence before losing the title to Lucas Browne in 2016. However, after Browne failed a drug test, the WBA reinstated Chagaev as champion, only to strip him of the title shortly after for failing to pay sanctioning fees.

On July 28, 2016, Chagaev announced his retirement from boxing at the age of 37 due to ongoing eye injuries. He finished his professional career with a record of 34 wins, three losses, and one draw, with 21 wins coming by way of knockout.

Ruslan Chagaev's journey in boxing was a rollercoaster of triumphs and tribulations. Despite the controversies surrounding his career, his accomplishments as the first Asian world heavyweight champion and his victories over formidable opponents have cemented his place in boxing history.
