Ruben Castillo, born on December 19, 1957, in Lubbock, Texas, emerged as a prominent figure in the featherweight and super featherweight divisions during his professional boxing career. Standing at 5 feet 7 inches with a 65-inch reach, Castillo fought with an orthodox stance. He began boxing at the age of 15, amassing an impressive amateur record of 40 wins and 2 losses.
Castillo made his professional debut on February 22, 1975, securing a fourth-round technical knockout against Frank Castro in Tucson, Arizona.
This victory marked the beginning of a career that spanned over two decades. During that time, he compiled a professional record of 67 wins, 10 losses, and 2 draws, with 35 victories coming by knockout.
Throughout his career, Castillo faced several world-class opponents and contended for world titles on multiple occasions. Notably, he challenged Hall of Famers such as Alexis Argüello, Salvador Sánchez, and Julio César Chávez. On January 20, 1980, Castillo fought Argüello for the WBC World Super Featherweight Title at the Community Center in Tucson, Arizona, but was stopped in the 11th round.
