Biography

Rafael Ruelas (born April 26, 1971) is a former professional boxer who held the IBF lightweight world championship from 1994 to 1995. He was born in Yerbabuena, Jalisco, Mexico.

Ruelas turned professional in 1988 and compiled a record of 53 wins (41 by knockout), four losses, and 0 draws. He competed in the featherweight, lightweight, and super lightweight divisions.

In 1992, Ruelas defeated Jorge Páez by 10th-round TKO to win the vacant NABF lightweight title. This victory earned him a shot at the IBF lightweight championship against Freddie Pendleton. Despite being knocked down early in the fight, Ruelas won by unanimous decision to capture the title.

Ruelas successfully defended his IBF lightweight title against Billy Schwer before facing rising star Oscar De La Hoya in a unification bout in 1995. Although Ruelas had beaten De La Hoya twice in the amateur ranks, De La Hoya emerged victorious, knocking Ruelas down twice and stopping him in the second round to claim the IBF and WBO lightweight titles.

Throughout his career, Ruelas scored notable wins over fighters such as Livingstone Bramble. His losses came against Kostya Tszyu, George Scott, Oscar De La Hoya, and Mauro Gutierrez.

Known for his tenacious, aggressive, and disciplined fighting style, Ruelas retired from boxing in 1999. He is married to Sabrina Ruelas, an American beauty product business owner, and they have three children together. In an interview, Ruelas stated that his family is his most significant accomplishment, surpassing his championship belts.
