Néstor "Tito" Hipólito Giovannini, born on February 7, 1961, in Rafaela, Santa Fe, Argentina, was an accomplished professional boxer who made his mark in the cruiserweight and light heavyweight divisions. Standing 6 feet tall and fighting out of an orthodox stance, Giovannini was known for his durability, technical ability, and toughness in the ring. Trained by Miguel Diaz, he competed at the highest levels of the sport during a career that spanned over a decade.
Giovannini debuted on July 6, 1984, entering the professional ranks in his hometown of Rafaela. Facing Mario Luis Gramajo in a scheduled six-round bout, he secured a unanimous decision victory, signalling the start of a promising career. Early on, Giovannini established himself as a rising contender in the Argentine boxing scene, consistently showcasing his skills against regional opponents.
Giovannini climbed the international rankings as his career progressed, earning opportunities against world-class opponents. He faced Australian champion Jeff Harding twice in 1989 and 1990 for the WBC World Light Heavyweight Title. In their first meeting, Giovannini showed grit and determination but lost a competitive decision. Their rematch on March 18, 1990, ended more decisively, with Giovannini being stopped in the 11th round after multiple knockdowns. These fights demonstrated Giovannini's ability to compete at the elite level despite falling short of victory.
Giovannini's most significant success came after moving up to the cruiserweight division, where he captured the WBO World Cruiserweight Title. On September 25, 1993, he faced Markus Bott in Germany and claimed the title via a close split decision, becoming a world champion and solidifying his legacy in the sport. Giovannini successfully defended the belt, including a notable rematch victory against Bott in 1994, proving his championship mettle.
His final professional fight occurred on June 16, 1997, against Johnny Nelson in Manchester, England, for the WBO World Cruiserweight Title. Facing a skilled and highly tactical opponent, Giovannini suffered a points loss, concluding his career with 38 wins (13 by knockout), 10 losses, and 3 draws.
