Molly “Meatball” McCann is a 35-year-old English super-bantamweight boxer from Liverpool, standing 5ft 4in with a 61.8in reach and an orthodox stance. That compact 0.96 reach-to-height ratio reflects the kind of in-the-pocket, high-pressure fighting she has been known for throughout a long career in combat sports that began well before her professional boxing debut on 13 September 2025.
Born on 4 May 1990 in Liverpool, Merseyside, McCann grew up in a working-class environment where sport quickly became both escape and identity. With a challenging home life and money often tight, she gravitated towards local gyms from an early age. She tried her hand at karate, kickboxing and Thai boxing before settling on boxing around the age of twelve, already showing the appetite for hard sparring, grit, and volume punching that would later define her style.
As a teenager, McCann boxed out of local Liverpool gyms, notably Golden Gloves ABC, where she built a firm amateur grounding. While detailed records are patchy, she is widely associated with national-level amateur success, having picked up titles and learned to apply relentless pressure over the distance. At the same time, she was a promising footballer, playing in midfield at women’s level before an ankle ligament injury at sixteen cut short any realistic ambitions of making a career in the sport. She went on to study sports-related subjects at university, maintaining a close connection to training and coaching while working her way through higher education.
With limited professional opportunities in women’s boxing at the time, McCann switched her focus to mixed martial arts in the early 2010s. Joining the tight-knit team at Next Generation MMA in Liverpool, she came under the guidance of head coach Paul Rimmer and a supporting cast of striking and grappling coaches who helped her blend her natural boxing instincts with improved wrestling and submissions. Working long shifts in ordinary jobs to fund her fight camps, she earned the nickname “Meatball” and built a reputation on the domestic MMA circuit as a crowd-pleasing, front-foot fighter.
Her success in MMA brought titles on the regional scene and eventually a run with major promotions, where her aggressive, hand-heavy style and strong personality made her a fan favourite. Over time, though, the pull of pure boxing grew stronger. By 2025, with a wealth of experience in high-profile combat sports events behind her, she committed to returning to the ring under Queensberry Rules. She launched a new chapter of her career at super-bantamweight.
McCann’s professional boxing debut came on 13 September 2025. Based out of Liverpool, she linked up with a dedicated boxing training team that included a head coach, conditioning specialists and long-time mentors from her earlier combat sports days. Their task was to refine her pressure style, tighten her defence and adapt her pacing from the rhythms of MMA to the more structured demands of professional boxing. That debut marked the formal beginning of her pro boxing record. Still, it rested on a foundation of decades spent fighting, learning and grafting in gyms across Liverpool – the real story behind “Meatball” McCann’s late-starting, but fully earned, life in the boxing ring.
