Miguel Angel Gonzalez

Miguel Ángel González, known as "El Mago Santa Tokyo," emerged from Mexico City's suburbs to become a prominent figure in boxing during the 1990s. Under the mentorship of esteemed trainer Pancho Rosales, González compiled an impressive amateur record of 63 wins and 3 losses. A highlight of his amateur career was defeating future WBC junior lightweight champion Gabriel Ruelas in 1988, securing his place on Mexico's Olympic team as a featherweight. However, his Olympic journey was cut short with a loss to South Korea's Lee Jae-Hyuk in his opening bout.

Transitioning to the professional arena at 18, González debuted on January 21, 1989, in Ciudad Victoria, Mexico, achieving a fifth-round technical knockout against Isidro Pacheco. His ascent was rapid; by August 24, 1992, he captured the vacant WBC lightweight title with a ninth-round TKO over Wilfrido Rocha. González's reign was marked by multiple defences against formidable opponents, including a unanimous decision over Darryl Tyson on December 5, 1992, and a rematch victory against Rocha on November 27, 1993, where he secured an eleventh-round TKO.

Seeking greater challenges, González moved up to the super lightweight division. On January 18, 1997, he faced Oscar De La Hoya for the WBC super lightweight title at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. Despite a valiant effort, González suffered his first professional defeat, losing by unanimous decision. Undeterred, he continued to compete at the highest levels, notably drawing with the legendary Julio César Chávez on March 7, 1998, in a bout for the vacant WBC super lightweight title. Another significant challenge came on August 21, 1999, when he faced Kostya Tszyu for the same title but was stopped in the tenth round.

González's career also saw him compete in the welterweight division, where he faced notable fighters such as Shane Mosley on November 20, 1999, and Arturo Gatti on March 17, 2001, though he did not secure victories in these encounters. After a professional journey spanning over 17 years, González concluded his career on October 7, 2006, with a tenth-round TKO win against Ulises Duarte in Xalapa, Mexico. He retired with a record of 51 wins, 5 losses, and 1 draw, including 40 victories by knockout, solidifying his legacy as one of Mexico's distinguished boxing champions.
