Marvis Frazier

Marvis Frazier emerged from his father Joe's legendary shadow as a highly accomplished amateur boxer before experiencing both triumph and harsh reality in the professional ranks. Born September 12, 1960, in Philadelphia, Frazier grew up immersed in boxing's highest levels, witnessing his father's historical battles from ringside after December 1968's Bonavena bout.

His amateur career proved exceptional - a 56-2 record, including victories over future champions Tim Witherspoon, James "Bonecrusher" Smith, and contender Mitch Green. Capturing the 1979 National Golden Gloves and 1980 National AAU Heavyweight championships established him as America's top amateur heavyweight prospect. A potential clash with Cuban great Teófilo Stevenson never materialized after Joe Frazier deemed his 19-year-old son too inexperienced for such a test.

Frazier's professional journey began promisingly in 1980 with a third-round TKO of Roger Troupe. After overcoming viral hepatitis in 1982, he avenged his amateur loss to James Broad and built a 10-0 record before facing WBC champion Larry Holmes in 1983. Despite entering as a 4½-1 underdog in an unsanctioned bout, Frazier's camp touted his speed and youth. However, Holmes stopped him in the first round, leading to criticism of Joe Frazier for altering his son's successful amateur style.

Following six consecutive wins, including victories over future champions Bernard Benton and Bonecrusher Smith, Frazier faced the rising phenomenon of Mike Tyson in 1986. The result - a 30-second knockout that stands as Tyson's quickest victory - effectively ended Frazier's championship aspirations. He retired in 1988 with a 19-2 record after three final victories.

Post-boxing, Frazier found his calling as an ordained Pentecostal minister in 1994, working actively with Prison Fellowship while managing the family limousine business. His 2013 autobiography "Meet Marvis Frazier: The Story of the Son of Smokin' Joe" completed the narrative of a fighter who, despite falling short of matching his father's championship achievements, carved out a respectable career before finding purpose beyond the ring.
