Kelly Pavlik

Born on April 5, 1982, in Youngstown, Ohio, Kelly Pavlik grew up in the city's traditional Slovak neighbourhood of Lansingville. After graduating from Lowellville High School and Mahoning County Joint Vocational School in 2000, Pavlik embarked on a professional boxing career that would see him rise to the pinnacle of the middleweight division.

As an amateur, Pavlik won several national titles, including the 1998 National Jr. PAL Amateur Championship and the 1999 U.S. National Under-19 Amateur Championship, both at 147 pounds. He turned professional in 2000 and quickly amassed an impressive record, winning his first 26 fights before capturing the NABF Middleweight title against Fulgencio Zúñiga in 2005.

Pavlik's defining moment came on September 29, 2007, when he faced Jermain Taylor for the WBC, WBO, The Ring, and lineal middleweight titles in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Although knocked down in the second round, Pavlik rallied to stop Taylor in the seventh round, becoming the new middleweight champion. He successfully defended his titles against Gary Lockett and Marco Antonio Rubio before suffering his first professional loss to Bernard Hopkins in a non-title bout at a catch weight of 170 pounds in 2008.

On April 17, 2010, Pavlik attempted to defend his middleweight titles against Sergio Martínez but lost a unanimous decision in a bloody and hard-fought battle. Following this loss, Pavlik moved up to the super middleweight division and struggled with injuries and personal issues, including a stint in rehab for alcohol addiction.

Pavlik made a comeback in 2011, winning three fights before being scheduled to face Andre Ward for the WBA and WBC super middleweight titles in early 2013. However, the fight was ultimately cancelled due to Ward's shoulder injury, and Pavlik announced his retirement from boxing on January 19, 2013, citing a lack of passion for the sport and health issues, including seizures.

Throughout his career, Pavlik was known for his powerful right hand, ability to trap opponents in the corner, and exciting style that made him a fan favourite. He finished his career with 40 wins (34 by knockout), two losses, and 0 draws.

Despite his success in the ring, Pavlik struggled with personal and legal issues outside of it. He was arrested multiple times, including for theft in 2013 and assault in 2015 and 2016.
