Julio Ulises Luna Ávila, known in the professional boxing world as “Canelito,” is an active Welterweight boxer from Mexico. Born on March 11, 1998, in Gómez Palacio, Durango, Mexico, he remains a resident of his birthplace, earning him the nickname ‘Canelito.’
Luna's connection to boxing is deep-rooted and familial. He is the brother of former world champion Yulihan “Cobrita” Luna, placing him within a significant Mexican boxing dynasty. The sport is literally in his blood, as Luna himself stated, “since I was born, practically I have lived in a boxing gym,” because his father was a boxer whom he accompanied to training from a young age. He officially began his amateur career at 12 years old, completing 90 amateur fights and participating successfully in various state and national tournaments.
Luna’s father, Julio Luna Sr., is his trainer and head coach, working closely with both Julio and his sister. They often train at the gimnasio del Contador Soto in Torreón, Coahuila, which is part of the metropolitan area of Laguna, shared with Gómez Palacio.
Luna made his professional debut on December 18, 2015, at the age of 17. The debut fight was held in his hometown of Gómez Palacio, Durango, Mexico. It resulted in a Win via Points Decision against opponent Ruben Tellez, who was also making his professional debut.
He campaigns in the Lightweight division, fights from an Orthodox stance, and stands at 5 feet 11 inches (180 cm). Luna is promoted by Manuel Garrido, a key figure in Mexican boxing promotion, and is closely associated with the promotional company Miura Boxing.
Outside the ring, Luna is also committed to his future, revealing he has been studying to become a public accountant when his career ends.
