Jesse James Leija Biography
Jesse James Leija, known as "The Texas Tornado," was born on July 8, 1966, in San Antonio, Texas. He began his professional boxing career on October 2, 1988, with a first-round knockout victory over Oscar Davis in his hometown. Standing 5 feet 5 inches tall with a reach of approximately 67 inches, Leija competed primarily in the super featherweight division.
Leija's career was marked by notable bouts against world-class opponents. On May 7, 1994, he captured the WBC super featherweight title by defeating Azumah Nelson via unanimous decision. He faced Nelson multiple times, with their series standing at 2-1-1 in Leija's favour. Leija also challenged for titles in higher weight classes, including a bout against Oscar De La Hoya on December 15, 1995, for the WBO lightweight title and a match against Kostya Tszyu on January 19, 2003, for the WBC and IBF light welterweight titles. He did not secure victories in these higher-weight title fights despite his efforts.
Throughout his 16-year career, Leija compiled a professional record of 47 wins, 7 losses, and 2 draws, with 19 victories coming by way of knockout. He retired on January 29, 2005, after a fifth-round knockout loss to Arturo Gatti in a contest for the WBC super lightweight title.
