Story

Javier "El Chatito" Jauregui carved out a notable career in Mexican boxing despite an unusually early professional start at age 14 in 1988. Guadalajara's 5'7" orthodox fighter built his reputation in Mexico's competitive domestic scene. He secured two TKO victories over future two-time lightweight champion Jose Luis Castillo in Mexican featherweight title bouts.

His March 2000 challenge for Acelino Freitas's WBO super featherweight title ended in a first-round stoppage loss, but Jauregui persevered. Three years later, he reached the pinnacle of his career by capturing the vacant IBF lightweight title with a TKO victory over Leavander Johnson in 2003. His championship reign proved brief, losing the title to Julio Diaz in his first defence in 2004.

Jauregui's career reflects the opportunities and hardships of Mexican boxing in the 1990s and early 2000s. Starting professionally at an age when most fighters are still amateurs, he developed into a legitimate world-class contender who competed across multiple weight divisions. His victories over Castillo, who would later become a notable champion, demonstrate his capability at his peak.

Tragically, Jauregui died on December 11, 2013, at just 40 years old, leaving behind a legacy as one of Guadalajara's world champions during a particularly competitive era in lightweight boxing.
