Gregorio Manuel Peralta, better known as Gregorio "Goyo" Peralta, was a remarkable Argentine boxer who made his mark in both the light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions. Born on May 8, 1935, in San Juan, Argentina, Peralta later resided in the Rosario area of Santa Fe Province.

Peralta turned professional on April 5, 1958, at the iconic Luna Park in Buenos Aires, where he knocked out Rene Pereira in the fourth round. He won his first five fights by knockout and quickly became a rising star in Argentine boxing.

Throughout his early career, Peralta faced notable opponents such as Jose Angel Manzur, Luis Ignacio, and Mauro Mina. On August 4, 1962, he captured the Argentine Heavyweight title by outpointing Jose Giorgetti over twelve rounds in Mar del Plata.

Peralta's most significant victory came on September 20, 1963, when he defeated world light heavyweight champion Willie Pastrano by decision over ten rounds in a non-title bout in Miami, Florida. This win marked Peralta's debut in the United States and solidified his status as a world-class fighter.

On April 10, 1964, Peralta challenged Pastrano for the world light heavyweight title in New Orleans, Louisiana. Although he put up a valiant effort, Peralta was knocked out in the sixth round. The fight's ending was controversial, with some arguing that Peralta was winning the bout when it was stopped.

Peralta continued to compete at a high level, winning the majority of his fights and even capturing the Argentine Heavyweight title. He faced Oscar Bonavena twice, losing the first encounter and drawing in the second.

One of Peralta's most memorable performances came against a young George Foreman on February 16, 1970, at Madison Square Garden. Although Peralta lost by unanimous decision, he went the full ten rounds with the future heavyweight champion, showcasing his skill, determination, and ability to withstand Foreman's powerful punches. Peralta would face Foreman again the following year, being knocked out in the tenth round.

Peralta fought in various countries throughout his career, including Uruguay, Brazil, Peru, Spain, and Germany. He faced top contenders such as Ron Lyle, holding him to a draw in their second encounter in 1973.

Gregorio Peralta retired from boxing in 1973 at the age of 38. His impressive record of 98 wins, nine losses, and nine draws, with 60 victories coming by knockout, places him among the select group of boxers who have won fifty or more fights by knockout during their careers.

After retiring, Peralta led a quiet life until his passing on October 3, 2001. He remains a legendary figure in Argentine boxing history, having achieved world-class status in the light heavyweight and heavyweight divisions—a rare feat for a Latin American fighter of his era.
