David Sears, born on December 17, 1959, in Howard Beach, New York, emerged from the vibrant boxing scene of Queens to become a notable contender in the light heavyweight division during the early 1980s. Standing at 6 feet 1 inch with a 74.4-inch reach, his orthodox stance and formidable presence in the ring quickly garnered attention.

Sears made his professional debut on February 17, 1982, at the Westchester County Center in White Plains, New York. In a scheduled four-round bout, he secured a second-round technical knockout against Cleve Hamphill. This victory set the tone for his career, showcasing his power and determination.

Over the next few years, Sears built an impressive record, leading to significant matchups against top-tier opponents. On January 25, 1984, he faced Eric Winbush at Harrah's Marina Hotel Casino in Atlantic City, earning a unanimous decision after ten rounds. This victory was a pivotal moment, marking Sears as a serious contender in the light heavyweight division.

Sears's pursuit of championship glory led him to challenge for the North American Boxing Federation (NABF) Light Heavyweight Title on May 22, 1984, against Willie Edwards at Park Center in Charlotte. The bout concluded in a unanimous draw after twelve rounds.

The pinnacle of Sears's career came on February 23, 1985, when he challenged the undisputed light heavyweight champion, Michael Spinks, for the WBC, WBA, and IBF World Light Heavyweight Titles at the Sands Casino Hotel in Atlantic City. Despite his determination, Spinks stopped Sears via technical knockout at 1:02 of the third round.

Undeterred, Sears continued to compete at a high level, facing Willie Edwards again on March 10, 1986, at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas for the NABF Light Heavyweight Title. This time, Edwards emerged victorious with a unanimous decision.

Sears's final professional bout occurred on December 26, 1986, when he challenged Bobby Czyz for the IBF World Light Heavyweight Title at the South Mountain Arena in West Orange, New Jersey. The fight ended in the first round, with Czyz winning by technical knockout, leading to Sears's retirement from professional boxing.
