Darrin Van Horn, known in the ring as “Schoolboy,” is a retired American professional boxer who competed in the super welterweight and super middleweight divisions. Born on September 7, 1968, in Cincinnati, Ohio, he later resided in Lexington, Kentucky. Standing 5 feet 11 inches tall with a 72.8-inch reach, Van Horn fought with an orthodox stance. His professional career began at the unusually young age of 16 on September 2, 1984, and spanned nearly a decade before ending on August 3, 1994.

Van Horn rose quickly in the professional ranks. By 1989, he had already claimed a world championship, defeating Robert Hines by unanimous decision to capture the IBF World Super Welterweight title. Although he lost the belt to Gianfranco Rosi later that year, he remained a strong contender in the division and challenged Rosi again in 1990, suffering another decision defeat. Later that year, he moved up in weight, campaigning at super middleweight, where he achieved his most notable successes.

In May 1991, Van Horn travelled to Italy and stopped Lindell Holmes in the 11th round to win the IBF World Super Middleweight title. He successfully defended the championship later that year with a third-round knockout of John Jarvis in California. His reign ended in January 1992 when Iran Barkley halted him in the second round at the Paramount Theatre in New York. Van Horn continued to box until 1994, finishing his career with a tenth-round technical knockout victory over Willie Ball in Texas.

Over the course of his career, Van Horn faced several prominent fighters of his era, including Robert Hines, Gianfranco Rosi, Lindell Holmes, and Iran Barkley. His ability to win titles in two weight divisions marked the peak of his professional achievements. He was known for his busy schedule in his early years, fighting frequently while also attending the University of Kentucky, which earned him the “Schoolboy” nickname.

Van Horn’s professional record stands at 53 wins, 3 losses, and no draws, with 29 victories coming by way of knockout. His style was built around solid fundamentals, steady output, and persistence, which allowed him to climb from local cards in Louisiana and Kentucky to world title bouts in Atlantic City, Italy, and New York. Retiring at just 25 years old, he left behind the unusual legacy of being both a two-division world champion and one of the few fighters to balance a professional career with academic studies at the same time.
