Carlos Canizales, widely recognised in boxing circles by his moniker “CCC,” has quietly emerged as one of Venezuela’s most formidable exports in the light flyweight division. Born in Caracas on March 11, 1993, Canizales leveraged his physical attributes—standing 5ft 3in with a reach of 64.6 inches—and a textbook orthodox stance to craft a career that has traversed both South American rings and venues across Asia.

His early days in the amateur ranks are not well documented at the same level as some of his contemporaries. Still, by the time he entered the paid ranks at 21, he displayed a readiness that spoke of robust foundational training. Canizales made his professional debut on July 4, 2014, at El Velodromo Teo Capriles in Caracas, facing Edicson Fuenmayor. The Venezuelan wasted no time announcing his presence, dispatching Fuenmayor via a first-round technical knockout that set the tone for an aggressive, high-output style. This debut served as the springboard to an almost unbroken string of early stoppages, as he cut through domestic competition with a series of knockouts and technical knockouts, rapidly building a formidable reputation. Early highlights included third-round stoppages of Yosman Rengifo and Vicente Mirabal, along with a first-round KO of Nelson Magallanes—all within his first year as a professional.

By 2016, Canizales had accumulated a string of victories that positioned him for international opportunities. This led to a pivotal encounter on December 31, 2016, when he fought Japan’s WBA light flyweight champion Ryoichi Taguchi in Tokyo. The fight was a gruelling twelve-round contest and produced a split draw, illustrating Canizales’ ability to compete on the global stage and signalling his arrival as a legitimate contender. Not deterred by narrowly missing out on a world title, Canizales returned to his home circuit, securing a series of stoppage victories that reinvigorated his campaign.

His defining moment arrived on March 18, 2018, in Kobe, Japan, where he contested Reiya Konishi for the vacant WBA (Regular) light flyweight title. In a raucous atmosphere and with the pressure of fighting abroad, Canizales dropped Konishi in the third round and maintained the edge through twelve hard-fought stanzas to secure a unanimous decision and claim world championship status. The official scorecards affirmed his superiority: 116–111, 115–112, and 114–113, marking a career zenith for both fighter and Venezuelan boxing on the international stage. His first world title defence saw him travel to Malaysia, where he stopped China’s Lü Bin in the twelfth round on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Lucas Matthysse bill. The champion’s late-fight power once again surfaced, as two knockdowns punctuated a commanding performance.

Canizales’ second successful title defence was staged on May 26, 2019, in Fuzhou, China, against Sho Kimura, a former WBO flyweight titleholder. Over twelve rounds, Canizales showcased a blend of tact and tenacity, taking control of the fight and emerging with a clear unanimous decision win. The three scorecards—118–110, 119–109, and 119–109—testified to his dominance against another world-class foe. Yet boxing’s unforgiving nature was soon evident. In May 2021, after a two-year hiatus, Canizales returned to launch his third defence against Mexico’s Esteban Bermudez. In an unexpected turn, Bermudez staggered and stopped Canizales in the sixth round, an upset that cost the Venezuelan his WBA title and temporarily halted his forward march.

Resilient as always, Canizales regrouped. Later that year, he returned with a unanimous decision over German Valenzuela, re-establishing momentum. His next phase unfolded across multiple continents, where he reasserted his knockout power with a fourth-round stoppage of ex-champion Ganigan Lopez and a first-round dispatching of Armando Torres for the WBA Fedecaribe flyweight belt. On June 10, 2023, in Buenos Aires, Canizales met Cuba’s Daniel Matellon in a WBA title eliminator. The bout was fierce and technical, ending in a technical decision win for Canizales when a cut—caused by an accidental head clash—forced the referee’s intervention after eight rounds. Judges’ scores reflected his control of the contest, propelling Canizales back toward a world title opportunity.

Canizales’ relentless quest eventually led to a high-stakes showdown for the vacant WBC light flyweight title against Thailand’s Panya Pradabsri on December 26, 2024, at Rajadamnern Stadium in Bangkok. The bout, fought at a frenetic pace, stretched the Venezuelan’s skills and resolve to the limit. After twelve taxing rounds, the judges handed down a majority decision in favour of Pradabsri; while one card registered a 114–114 draw, the other two narrowly favoured the Thai by scores of 115–113 and 116–112. This razor-close defeat, though disappointing, underlined Canizales’ standing as a perennial elite at light flyweight and one of Venezuela’s most persistent campaigners in a division brimming with talent.

The narrative of his recent years also includes a hard-fought majority decision defeat to Japan’s unified WBA and WBC champion Kenshiro Teraji in January 2024, a fight regarded as one of the finest of the year. Both men visited the canvas, but Teraji ultimately retained his crowns after twelve torrid rounds that tested Canizales’ championship mettle to the fullest. Wins over Ivan Garcia Balderas and other accomplished regional contenders have cemented Canizales as a figure able to bounce back regardless of the setbacks, making him a feared and respected fixture atop the division.
