Anatoly Alexandrov emerged from Shakhtinsk, Kazakhstan, during the late Soviet era to become a significant figure in Russian professional boxing's early post-Soviet period. The 5'6" orthodox fighter began his professional career relatively late, debuting at age 23 with a four-round points victory over Nikolai Dolmatov in Rostov-na-Donu on September 29, 1990.
Throughout the 1990s, Alexandrov built his career during a transformative period for Russian boxing, as the sport transitioned from the Soviet amateur system to professional competition. He accumulated a 32-4 record before securing his defining moment - a victory over French boxer Julien Lorcy for the vacant WBO super featherweight title.
His championship reign proved brief but historically significant as one of Russia's early professional world champions. Alexandrov's title tenure ended dramatically against the rising Brazilian knockout artist Acelino Freitas in 1999 during just his second defence. This loss marked a turning point, and he competed only sporadically afterwards before retiring in 2001.
Alexandrov's career, spanning from 1990 to 2001, bridged a crucial period in Russian boxing history. While his reign as champion was short-lived, his achievement in capturing a world title helped establish a path for future Russian professionals during the sport's development in the post-Soviet era.
