Alfredo Escalera, famously known as "El Salsero" due to his rhythmic fighting style that mirrored his love for salsa music, was a prominent figure in the world of professional boxing during the 1970s and early 1980s. Born on March 21, 1952, in Carolina, Puerto Rico, Escalera grew up in a vibrant cultural setting that shaped his personal and professional life.

His professional debut was on December 2, 1970, against Bob Payzant in Portland, Oregon, where he showcased his potential by securing a victory through a fourth-round technical knockout. This win was the beginning of a storied career that saw Escalera climb the ranks to become a world champion.

One of the pinnacles of his career was winning the WBC World Super Featherweight Title on July 5, 1975, from Kuniaki Shibata in Hitachinaka, Japan. His tenure as a champion was marked by numerous defences against challenging opponents. Notably, he defended his title against Leonel Hernandez in Caracas on September 20, 1975, where the match ended in a split decision draw, showcasing the fierce competition at the top levels of the sport.

Escalera's title defences took him around the world, from Oslo, where he defeated Svein Erik Paulsen by technical knockout, to San Juan, where he triumphed over opponents like Jose Fernandez and Ray Lunny III, the latter of whom retired in the 12th round of their fight. His fighting style was characterized by aggressive tactics and resilience, traits that made him a favourite among boxing enthusiasts.

However, Escalera is best remembered for his two epic bouts against Alexis Arguello. Their first encounter on January 28, 1978, at Estadio Juan Ramon Loubriel in Bayamon ended with Escalera losing by technical knockout in the 13th round. They met again on February 4, 1979, in Rimini, Italy, where Escalera once more faced defeat by technical knockout in the 13th round. This fight remains a significant part of boxing history for its intensity and the high skill level displayed.

After a robust career, Alfredo Escalera decided to hang up his gloves following a loss to Charlie Brown at Madison Square Garden on September 15, 1983. This bout ended in a unanimous decision after 10 rounds, marking the end of an impressive professional journey. Escalera retired with a record that reflected his significant impact on the super-featherweight division, including memorable bouts that are still discussed by boxing fans and historians alike.

Throughout his career, Escalera was known for his prowess inside the ring, his charismatic personality, and his ability to engage with fans, making him one of the beloved figures in the sport of boxing. His legacy continues to influence aspiring boxers from Puerto Rico and beyond.
