Born in the bustling city of Accra, Ghana, on December 24, 1980, Adama Osumanu, later known as the "Ozzie Adams Machine Gun," embarked on a boxing journey that saw him ascend from the gritty gyms of his homeland to the bright lights of major international arenas. Standing 5 feet 11 inches tall and adopting an orthodox stance, Osumanu crafted an aggressive and precise style, qualities that earned him his moniker and a reputation as a formidable middleweight.
Osumanu's boxing odyssey began in the amateur ranks. He quickly established himself as a potent force. He represented Ghana at various international competitions, including a significant appearance at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. His amateur tenure laid a robust foundation for a commendable professional career.
Making his professional debut on May 25 2001, Osumanu faced off against Akeem Alarape at the Kaneshie Sports Complex in his hometown of Accra. He made a statement that evening, stopping Alarape in the second round, a win that set the tone for the initial phase of his career. Over the next decade, he honed his skills. He accumulated an impressive record, primarily fighting out of Ghana before relocating to the United States.
Once in the U.S., Osumanu continued to build his career, basing himself in Joliet, Illinois. Despite facing early setbacks, including close decision losses, his determination never wavered. This resilience led him to significant victories, such as capturing the vacant IBO International Middleweight Championship in December 2010, a win that marked him as Ghana's first middleweight to hold such a title.
Osumanu's quest for global recognition saw him challenge for world titles against some of the division's elite fighters. His most notable bouts were against Daniel Geale in March 2012 for the IBF World Middleweight title and against the feared Gennady Golovkin in February 2014 for the WBA and IBO Middleweight titles. Although Osumanu did not secure a victory in these high-stakes encounters, his performances against such world-class opposition were a testament to his skill and heart in the ring.
On May 1 2021, Osumanu laced up his gloves for the final time as a professional. In a bout held at the Olympia Athletic Center in Saint Charles, Missouri, he faced Alex Theran. Although the fight ended in a unanimous decision loss for Osumanu, it did not diminish the achievements of his two-decade-long career, which he concluded with a respectable record of 27 wins, 5 losses, and 20 knockouts.
