Vitali Klitschko successfully defended his WBC heavyweight title with a knockout victory over Albert Sosnowski at the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. The knockout came at 2:30 in the 10th round of their scheduled 12-round bout, improving Klitschko's record to 42 wins, two losses, and 38 victories by knockout. Sosnowski, aiming to become the first Polish heavyweight world champion, saw his record move to 45 wins, two losses, and two draws, with 27 victories by knockout.

The match was Klitschko's fourth defence of his WBC heavyweight title. It was notable not only for the action in the ring but also for its broadcast reach, being aired on RTL Television in Germany, Inter in Ukraine, and Canal+ in Poland, despite concerns over the broadcasting rights in Poland due to high costs. In Canada, the fight was available on pay-per-view.

The 38-year-old Klitschko, with his brother Wladimir Klitschko, the IBF and WBO world heavyweight champion, in his corner, used his height and weight advantage over the 31-year-old Sosnowski to control the fight. Klitschko managed to wear down his opponent over the rounds, capitalizing on Sosnowski's youth and mistakes. Sosnowski acknowledged Klitschko's skill and experience post-fight, admitting he had given his all but was overwhelmed by Klitschko's pressure and power.

The fight's location had special significance for Klitschko, as it was held at the home of German Bundesliga football club Schalke, of which he has been a member since 2001. Throughout the match, Klitschko progressively took command, especially from the fifth round onward, when he began to significantly damage Sosnowski. This led to a bloody nose and several powerful hits that ultimately culminated in the knockout.

After the match, Klitschko expressed his interest in fighting WBA titleholder David Haye or Nikolai Valuev as he continues to dominate the heavyweight division.
