Fight Summary
On July 18, 1998, Roy Jones Jr defended his WBC light heavyweight title while capturing the WBA belt against Lou Del Valle at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Jones entered the ring with a record of 36-1, having already established himself as the dominant force in the division. Del Valle, at 27-1, was a capable southpaw with solid technical skills, holding the WBA title heading into the unification bout. Promoted by M&M Sports and televised on HBO Sports, the event marked another step in Jones’ path to undisputed supremacy in the light heavyweight division.
Both fighters weighed in at the 175-pound limit. Del Valle, a left-handed boxer with durability and experience, presented a stylistic challenge, but Jones entered as the heavy favourite, with his athleticism and speed unmatched in the division.
The fight began with Jones controlling the tempo and distance, utilizing his superior reflexes to dictate the exchanges. Del Valle attempted to disrupt Jones’ rhythm by staying composed behind his jab, but he struggled to find consistent success. Jones’ combination of head movement, footwork, and fast counters kept him in command for most of the early rounds.
In the 8th round, Del Valle created a brief moment of drama by landing a perfectly-timed left hand that caught Jones off balance and sent him to the canvas. This marked the first official knockdown of Roy Jones Jr.’s career, a rare occurrence that highlighted Del Valle’s ability to capitalize on fleeting openings. However, Jones, unhurt and immediately alert, rose quickly and resumed control, showing no signs of damage or disruption to his confidence.
From that point on, Jones intensified his offence, showcasing his trademark hand speed and precision. Del Valle’s output dwindled as Jones continued to land crisp combinations while avoiding most of the return fire. The champion’s punches were sharp and calculated, systematically wearing down Del Valle without overcommitting to risky exchanges.
After 12 rounds, the judges awarded Jones a unanimous decision victory, with scores of 118-109, 119-108, and 118-109. Despite the knockdown, Jones’ dominance was clear, and the result further cemented his status as the top light heavyweight in the world. Del Valle’s effort was commendable, particularly his ability to score a knockdown against a fighter who had rarely appeared vulnerable. Still, his inability to follow up on the opportunity allowed Jones to comfortably retain control.
Jones unified the WBC and WBA light heavyweight titles with this win, improving his record to 37-1. For Del Valle, the loss dropped his record to 27-2 but demonstrated his ability to compete with one of the era’s greatest talents. The fight underscored Jones’ dominance and his ability to recover from adversity, even when momentarily tested. It also marked another milestone in his pursuit of total unification and a lasting legacy in the sport.
Gym Rat Assessment
Roy Jones Jr against Lou Del Valle was a unification fight, but it never felt like two equal champions meeting. Jones was the WBC title-holder and the outstanding fighter in boxing, while Del Valle brought the WBA belt and the useful advantage of being a southpaw who had previously sparred with him. He knew Jones better than most, but knowing what a man does and stopping him from doing it are two different matters.
Jones controlled nearly everything with his speed, reflexes and judgement of distance. He kept his left hand low, invited Del Valle to lead and then beat him to the punch. Del Valle was tough and disciplined, but far too cautious. Against Jones in his prime, waiting for the perfect opening meant spending entire rounds doing nothing while Roy flicked in shots from angles no conventional boxer would attempt.
The eighth-round knockdown gave Del Valle his place in history. He caught Jones with a right followed by a straight left as Roy pulled away with his hands down. Jones went over backwards and later blamed his footing, but it was a legitimate knockdown and the first of his professional career.
The disappointment was Del Valle’s response. He had finally exposed Jones’s carelessness, yet he did not properly go after him. Roy rose clear-headed, reset himself and resumed the schooling. The scores of 119–108 and 118–109 twice were fair.
For me, Del Valle deserves respect for achieving what nobody else had managed, but one punch does not win a championship. Jones was too quick, too clever and too far ahead of the rest of the division.
