The fight
On February 24, 2001, Roy Jones Jr. defended his collection of light heavyweight titles against Derrick Harmon at the Ice Palace in Tampa, Florida. In front of more than 14,000 fans, Jones delivered another dominant performance, adding another chapter to his legacy as one of the most skilled fighters of his era. Harmon, a southpaw ranked #4 by the WBA, #8 by the IBF, and #9 by the WBC, entered the bout as a clear underdog but showed grit and resilience against the pound-for-pound king.
With a record of 43-1, Jones weighed in at 174 pounds and looked confident as he made his eighth defence of the WBC title, seventh of the WBA belt, fourth of the IBF crown, and first of the IBO title. At 175 pounds and holding a 20-1 record, Harmon was fighting for the biggest opportunity of his career, but the gap in skill and experience quickly became apparent.
From the opening bell, Jones took command with his speed, precision, and unorthodox movement. Harmon attempted to establish his jab and counterpunch, but Jones' superior reflexes allowed him to avoid most of Harmon's attacks while landing sharp, clean punches in return. Through the early rounds, Jones alternated between showboating and punishing Harmon with combinations to the head and body, keeping the challenger on the defensive.
Harmon's southpaw stance and defensive approach allowed him to avoid knockdowns, but Jones' accuracy and volume were overwhelming. Jones had effectively neutralized Harmon's offence by the middle rounds, landing at will while remaining virtually untouched. The judges' scorecards reflected Jones' dominance, with all three scoring every round in his favour, 100-90 at the time of the stoppage.
The fight's decisive moment came in the tenth round when Jones landed a flurry of punches that visibly shook Harmon. Jones busted Harmon's right eardrum during the exchange, leaving the challenger visibly dazed and struggling to maintain his balance. After the round, Harmon's corner assessed the damage and decided to stop the fight before the start of the eleventh, resulting in a technical stoppage victory for Jones.
Jones earned $4 million for the bout, while Harmon took home $350,000. The fight underscored the stark difference between Jones and the rest of the light heavyweight division, as he easily retained his titles and continued solidifying his status as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the sport.
The loss was a humbling experience for Harmon, but it demonstrated his determination to stand against one of the greatest fighters of all time. For Jones, the win was another dominant performance in a career filled with them, showcasing his unmatched skills and ability to control the ring against any opponent. The fight served as a reminder of Jones' reign as the undisputed ruler of the light heavyweight division.
