Alvarez, a former WBA World Minimumweight titleholder with four defences behind him had won the WBA World Light-flyweight belt from Beibis Mendoza in March 2001 and was making his third defence against the IBF champion Burgos.
The fight ended in a split decision draw which meant that both men retained their titles.
