Roberto Duran vs Ray Lampkin, Sunday, March 2, 1975

The fight

The outdoor arena at Gimnasio Nuevo Panama—now known as the Roberto Durán Arena—was as hot and humid as ever when Roberto Durán defended his WBA World Lightweight title against Ray Lampkin on March 2, 1975. Lampkin started strong, boxing skillfully and proving he would trade punches with the champion. However, Durán quickly took control, pressing forward with relentless aggression while Lampkin fought on the back foot, picking his moments to counter.

Despite Lampkin's resilience and determination, his best right hands failed to deter Durán. The Panamanian champion's relentless pressure and superior firepower gradually wore down his challenger. Lampkin showed immense heart, battling on even as the punishment mounted. He outlasted Esteban DeJesús as Durán's longest-lasting challenger by lasting into the later rounds. However, it became increasingly clear that his willpower alone might not be enough to see him through all 15 rounds.

Durán made sure of that. Less than 30 seconds into the 14th round, as Lampkin moved toward the ropes, Durán unleashed a devastating left hook that landed flush on his jaw. Lampkin collapsed backwards, his head slamming against the canvas with sickening force. He was out cold, and the aftermath was grim. Sports Illustrated reported that Lampkin remained unconscious for 80 minutes and was hospitalized for five days. At one point, a false media report even claimed he had died, though he survived the brutal knockout. However, the fall temporarily paralyzed his left leg.

After the fight, Durán delivered one of his most infamous quotes: "I was not in my best condition. Today, I sent him to the hospital. Next time I'll put him in the morgue." It was a chilling statement that only added to his fearsome reputation.
