Duran, known for his formidable punching power and nicknamed "Hands of Stone," was riding a wave of success, having compiled a record of 53 wins against just one loss. His opponent, Leoncio Ortiz, a seasoned Mexican boxer with a record of 30 wins, 5 losses, and 2 draws, was determined to upset the champion.

Ortiz proved himself a worthy opponent, despite being outgunned by Duran's power, Ortiz managed to last nearly the entire distance of the bout. The Mexican challenger weighed 133½ lbs, slightly under the lightweight limit, while Duran tipped the scales at 135 lbs.
