WBA World Lightweight champion Roberto "Hands of stone" Duran made the seventh defence of his title at the Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, Puerto Rico against tough Mexican contender Leoncio Ortiz.

It took the champion until 2:39 of the 15th and final round to find the punch that would render Ortiz incapable of carrying on. A long right uppercut dumped the challenger heavily on his back and referee Waldemar Schmidt finished his count before Ortiz could get back to his feet.
