On Saturday, 3rd May 2003, the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada hosted the WBC and WBA World Super-welterweight title fight between Oscar De La Hoya and Luis Ramon Campas. Promoted by Top Rank and aired on HBO Pay-per-view, the match was De La Hoya's second defense of his WBC title and his first defense of the WBA title. De La Hoya, weighing in at 154 lbs, faced off against Campas, who tipped the scales at 153½ lbs.
The fight began with De La Hoya controlling the distance and pace. Campas, a rugged and aggressive fighter, attempted to close the distance and apply pressure on De La Hoya.
As the rounds progressed, De La Hoya's ring intelligence began to show. He effectively countered Campas' advances and landed combinations that weakened Campas, however, Luis continued to press forward, demonstrating his durability.
In round 7, De La Hoya's dominance reached its peak. He unleashed a barrage of powerful punches that visibly hurt Campas, who was unable to effectively respond or defend himself. Recognizing the danger Campas was in, referee Vic Drakulich stepped in and stopped the fight at 2:54 of the round, awarding De La Hoya a TKO victory.
With this win, Oscar De La Hoya successfully defended his WBC and WBA World Super-welterweight titles, as well as his Ring Magazine junior middleweight world title.
