The fight

On January 3, 2009, at the Pacifico in Yokohama, Japan, Paulus Moses of Namibia faced Yusuke Kobori for the WBA lightweight title. Moses, entering the bout with an undefeated record of 23-0, secured a unanimous decision victory over Kobori, who held a 23-2-1 record at the time. The judges scored the fight 119-109, 115-113, and 115-113, all in favor of Moses.

Throughout the match, Moses effectively utilized his reach advantage and tactical prowess to outbox Kobori, who had won the title by defeating José Alfaro in May 2008. Kobori struggled to penetrate Moses's defence and failed to land significant punches that could alter the fight's momentum. Moses's consistent performance across all rounds ensured his control over the bout, culminating in his unanimous decision victory.
This was part of a joint main event featuring Toshiaki Nishioka defending his WBC World Super Bantamweight Title against Genaro Garcia. Nishioka won by a 12th-round TKO, with Garcia being knocked down once in the 4th and once in the 9th rounds.

Moses's victory marked a significant milestone in his career. He became the WBA lightweight champion. Later that year, he successfully defended the title against Takehiro Shimada before losing it to Miguel Acosta in 2010.

After losing the title to Moses, Kobori retired from professional boxing due to health issues. He concluded his career with a record of 23 wins, 3 losses, and 1 draw.
