In a showcase of his boxing skillset, Michael Moorer successfully defended his World Boxing Organization Light Heavyweight Title with a commanding first-round knockout against Mario Oscar Melo.
This bout took place on April 28, 1990, at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Moorer, came into the ring at 174 pounds to face Melo, a southpaw from Isidro Casanova, a suburb of Buenos Aires, Argentina, who also weighed in at 174 pounds.
Melo, who had previously secured victories against fellow Argentine and world title challenger Sergio Daniel Merani not once but twice, brought a commendable record and southpaw stance into the ring. However, Moorer's impeccable timing and power swiftly determined the fight's outcome.
Melo came out firing bombs, but Moorer casually blocked and slipped most of the incoming whilst landing hard straight left hands from his southpaw stance. Melo threw everything he had in his arsenal to try to stem the onslaught, but Moorer landed a devastating left hook to Melo's body, a blow that sent the Argentine challenger to the mat, writhing in pain. The severity of the blow was such that Melo spat out his mouthpiece, making no effort to beat referee Joe O'Neill's ten-count, thus ending the fight at 1:52 of the first round.
This victory marked Moorer's eighth successful defence of his title, underlining his dominance in the light heavyweight division.
Post-fight, Melo ventured to move up in weight classes, facing notable opponents, including Brazil's Adilson Rodrigues and former world heavyweight champion Tony Tubbs. Still, a lack of natural size ultimately led to defeats in the majority of his remaining pro bouts. Mario Melo retired from professional boxing in 1998.
