Marvin Hagler vs Mustafa Hamsho

On October 3, 1981, Marvin Hagler defended his undisputed world middleweight championship against top contender Mustafa Hamsho at the Rosemont Horizon in Rosemont, Illinois. This bout marked Hagler's third defence of his WBA and WBC titles.

Hagler, weighing in at 157 lbs, faced the 160 lb Hamsho in a contest that showcased the champion's superior skills and punching power. Hamsho, known for his aggressive, brawling style, came forward relentlessly throughout the fight. However, Hagler's accuracy, counter-punching ability, and defensive skills proved too much for the challenger.

The fight was action-packed, with Hamsho pressing the action and Hagler effectively countering and landing the cleaner, more damaging blows. In the third round, Hamsho opened a small cut over Hagler's right eye with a head butt, but Hagler quickly responded by cutting Hamsho's right eye with a hook.

As the fight progressed, Hagler's superior technique became increasingly evident. His straight left hand, right hook, and stinging jab consistently found their mark, gradually breaking Hamsho's resistance. Despite absorbing significant punishment, Hamsho pressed forward, occasionally landing solid hooks and jabs.

By the 11th round, Hamsho's face was heavily bruised and cut. At 2:09 of the round, referee Octavio Meyran stopped the fight with Hamsho helpless on the ropes, just as Hamsho's handler, Al Braverman, entered the ring to stop the contest.

The judges' scorecards at the time of the stoppage reflected Hagler's dominance: 100-93, 100-91, and 100-85, all in favour of the champion. This victory extended Hagler's winning streak to 28 fights, improving his record to 53-2-2 with 44 knockouts.

The fight, witnessed by a crowd of 10,000, not only solidified Hagler's status as the premier middleweight of his era but also demonstrated his ability to handle a formidable, relentless opponent spectacularly.
