In much need of a good performance, Calzaghe finally found a dance partner whose aggressive come-forward style would make for a fan-friendly fight. Sheika didn't lack confidence, nor did he have anything but disdain for the champion in the build-up.

Calzaghe countered Sheika's attacks from the 1st bell, catching him with hurtful left-hand shots, all the time catching most of the American's punches on his arms and gloves.

By the 5th round, Sheika's face was showing how accurate and damaging the Welshman's shots were and when he was badly wobbled, referee Genaro Rodriguez stepped in to stop what had been a one-sided fight. The time of the stoppage was 2:08 of the round.

Sheika went on to challenge Eric Lucas (WBC) in September 2002, Jeff Lacy (IBF) in December 2004, and Marcus Beyer (WBC) in September 2005, losing each time by unanimous decision.
